High-Theft Risk Vehicles: What Drivers Need to Know

Vehicle theft continues to rise across Canada, and unfortunately, some makes and models are being targeted more than others. As theft methods become more sophisticated, insurance companies are also adapting by introducing new requirements and recommending additional protection for high-risk vehicles.

At Nova Insurance, we want our clients to understand what this means, how it may impact their insurance policy, and what options are available to help protect their vehicle.

Why Are Certain Vehicles Targeted?

Organized auto theft has become increasingly advanced in recent years. Criminals often target vehicles that are:

  • In high demand overseas
  • Easy to export or dismantle for parts
  • Equipped with keyless entry systems
  • Commonly driven and easy to resell

SUVs, luxury vehicles, and newer models with push-button start technology are among the most commonly stolen vehicles in Canada.

How Insurance Companies Are Responding

As theft claims continue to increase, insurance companies are taking steps to reduce losses and improve vehicle recovery rates. Depending on the vehicle you own, insurers may:

  • Require approved anti-theft devices (Tag, KYCS, Domino)
  • Apply theft-related surcharges
  • Restrict certain coverages
  • Recommend vehicle tracking systems
  • Offer discounts when approved theft recovery systems are installed

Some insurers now require additional theft protection before they will provide comprehensive coverage on certain high-risk vehicles.

What Is the KYCS Locate Program?

One anti-theft solution gaining attention in Nova Scotia and across Canada is the KYCS Locate Program. KYCS stands for “Keep Your Community Safe.” The program uses theft recovery and wireless identification technology designed to help locate stolen vehicles and assist law enforcement with recovery efforts.

The KYCS Locate system is recognized by several Canadian insurance providers as an approved theft recovery solution. In some cases, installing the system may help remove theft surcharges or qualify drivers for insurance discounts.

Key Features

  • Virtually Undetectable: Unlike standard GPS trackers that continuously broadcast a signal, KYCS devices (about the size of a deck of cards) typically sleep and send an encrypted location "ping" only once a day. This makes them invisible to thieves scanning for electronic devices.
  • No Monthly Fees: Because they only ping once a day, the battery can last up to 5 years. Units usually come with multi-year pre-paid tracking that requires no recurring subscription.
  • No Wiring Needed: The units are self-powered and magnetically mounted, meaning they can be easily hidden anywhere in a vehicle without complex electrical installation.
  • Tamper Alerts: The associated mobile app will alert you if the device is moved unexpectedly or if someone tries to disable it.

Unlike traditional alarm systems, recovery-based technology focuses on helping authorities locate and recover a vehicle after a theft occurs.

Vehicle Theft Prevention Tips

While no system can guarantee your vehicle will never be stolen, there are several ways to reduce your risk:

  • Park in well-lit areas or garages whenever possible
  • Use steering wheel locks or secondary immobilizers
  • Store key fobs away from entry points in RFID-blocking pouches
  • Never leave valuables visible inside your vehicle
  • Consider installing an approved theft recovery or tracking system
  • Keep your insurance coverage updated and reviewed regularly

Understanding Your Coverage

Comprehensive coverage is what protects your vehicle against theft. If your vehicle is stolen and not recovered, this coverage may help pay for the loss, subject to your deductible and policy terms.

If you own a high-theft-risk vehicle, it’s important to review your policy carefully and ensure any insurer requirements are completed promptly. Failure to install required anti-theft systems could impact coverage eligibility.
