Wildfire Preparedness

Wildfire "season" is a relatively new concept in Nova Scotia, and it seems like the risk is becoming greater each year which is why preparing is more important than ever. Most wildfires are spread by embers or sparks igniting materials on or near your home. Maintenance to the area closest to your home, and your home itself, have the greatest impact in reducing your risk of wildfire damage.

Home & Yard Maintenance:

  • ALWAYS check https://novascotia.ca/burnsafe/ before making a fire.
  • Do not store propane or gas tanks or firewood piles under your deck or close to your home
  • Do not use prone landscaping, such as bark or pine needle mulches, within 10 meters of your home
  • Keep fire pits as far away from structures as possible and cover with a fine mesh if possible
  • Space trees 3m or more apart to reduce the chances of a fire jumping from tree to tree
  • Prune trees and remove branches from the ground
  • Clean any fallen branches and debris every spring and fall
  • Ensure your property's address is clearly marked so emergency resources can locate it quickly

Safeguarding your Possessions

Many belongings are replaceable, but some hold deep personal significance. When wildfires strike, losing cherished memories and valuables can be devastating. To safeguard what matters most, consider these precautions:

Digitize Important Documents

Store digital copies of essential papers and photos. Nova Insurance offers 24/7 access to insurance documents.

Take a Home Inventory

Speed up the replacement process by documenting your possessions. Take photos or videos of each room.

Invest in a Fire Resistant Safe or Bag

Purchase a fire-resistant safe or bag for vital documents like passports, documents, and wills.

Emergency Response Plan

Emergency situations, such as wildfires, can be chaotic and stressful. Having a home emergency response plan can help you and your family stay safe and feel confident in an emergency situation.

Prepare an Exit Plan

Map out all exits in your home and practice evacuation drills with family members, including any with special needs.

Stay Connected

Develop a communication plan for receiving updates and staying in touch with loved ones and emergency services.

Plan for your Pets

Ensure your pets' safety by including them in your emergency plan and packing necessary supplies.

Create an Emergency Bag

Keep essential items in one place for quick evacuation; here are some examples of things to pack in your emergency bag:

  • Emergency blankets
  • Flashlight with batteries or crank
  • Radio
  • Copy of emergency contacts
  • Non perishable food items
  • Medical supplies - first aid kit, copies of prescriptions, hand sanitizer
  • Bottles of water
