Your Safe-Boaters Checklist!

Summer is all about chasing those waves - but we're wishing you only calm seas and fair winds when you're enjoying time on the water! Ensure a fun and safe boating experience with these essential tips:

Wear a Life Jacket:

  • Always wear a properly fitted life jacket. Make sure everyone on board has one, especially children.
  • Pets need lifejackets too! Even if they can swim, the handle allows you to assist them back onboard if they jump or fall.

Check the Weather:

  • Before heading out, check the weather forecast. Avoid boating in severe weather conditions.

Boat Capacity:

  • Don’t overload your boat. Follow the manufacturer’s weight and passenger capacity limits to prevent capsizing.

Safety Equipment:

  • Ensure your boat is equipped with essential safety gear: fire extinguishers, flares, a first-aid kit, a whistle or horn, and a throwable flotation device.

Navigation Lights:

  • Make sure your boat’s navigation lights are working properly, especially if you plan to be on the water after dark.

Avoid Alcohol:

  • Stay sober while operating a boat. Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of accidents.

Know the Rules:

  • Familiarize yourself with local boating laws and navigation rules. Respect no-wake zones and keep a safe distance from other vessels.

Pre-Departure Checklist:

  • Perform a pre-departure checklist to ensure your boat is in good working order. Check fuel levels, engine, and electrical systems.

Communication Plan:

  • Let someone onshore know your boating plans, including your route and expected return time. Carry a fully charged mobile phone or marine radio.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings:

  • Keep an eye out for swimmers, other boats, and obstacles in the water. Maintain a safe speed and stay alert at all times.

Sun Protection:

  • Apply sunscreen, wear hats and sunglasses, and stay hydrated to protect yourself from sun exposure.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Know how to respond in an emergency. Practice man-overboard drills and ensure everyone on board knows what to do in case of an accident.
